Farming & The Environment

Farming and conservation of the environment go hand in hand at Yattendon. The Estate has practised “responsible English farming”  since 1925. This commitment enables us to look forward to a sustainable future in the diverse and beautiful North Wessex Downs.

Integrating areas for nature across the estate is fundamental to developing a resilient farming system. Fifteen percent of the farmland is dedicated to protecting native species, creating habitats for beneficial insects and feeding farmland birds.  We working closely with local organisations and volunteers groups who help us to monitor and record our progress, ensuring we continue to improve on farm habitats for wildlife

The estate works in partnership with eight local farmers as part of the upper pang river catchment, sharing knowledge to collectively manage and improve water quality and connect habitats across the local landscape.

We are also part of the LEAF demonstration farm network (Linking Environment and Farming), one of 40 farms across the UK committed to delivering and promoting sustainable farming practices, showcasing approaches that push forward the boundaries of Integrated Farm Management. Every year we carry out the LEAF Sustainable Farming Review to help us focus on reducing our carbon footprint.

Solar Energy

In 2023, the Estate made the decision to install three separate solar arrays on the Estate.

In total, there are 1,973 solar panels installed across the Estate with the potential to create a total output of 832 kWp. The arrays have been designed so as to ensure maximum electricity is consumed by the businesses that are connected to the systems with surplus electricity being sold to the grid. We are anticipating that over 75% of the electricity being produced will be consumed on site and they should save 153 tonnes of carbon being emitted on an annual basis. This equates to the equivalent of planting 7,046 trees per annum.

The second system was installed at one of our Commercial sites, Childs Court Farm, where we have a range of light industrial and commercial occupiers.  This system is slightly smaller at 67 kW and has been designed to match the electricity demands on site.  A total of 165 modules have been fixed to the southern elevation of one of the warehouse buildings and will supply 7 of our tenants with clean electricity.

The third system was installed at Vicars Game to help power the supply to butchery and farm shop. Again, this system has been designed to try and maximise use on site. A total of 720 panels have been installed in the 306 kWP system which should save the equivalent of 56 tonnes of carbon annually each year which is the equivalent to planting 2.554 trees per annum.
