School Farm Visit

The children have been learning about plants and how they grow and in preparation for the day about wheat. On the day we were able to take the children on a tractor and trailer ride out to the fields to show them wheat growing in the ground then back to the barns to learn the process of turning wheat into bread rolls. The children learnt about the process from farm to baker through a clever workshop where they each had a go at collecting the grain from Farmer Nick at Yattendon, grinding wheat into a flour at “the mill” and then processing the flour at “the bakery”. Then it was back outside to inspect the farming machinery. Nick talked the children through what each piece of kit does and there is no doubt that the combine harvester was a big hit!

The children also had a chance to enjoy a bug hunting and identification activity out on the Estate. Collection pots, magnifying glasses and identification charts allowed us to identify our findings and we had quite a collection from spiders to caterpillars and aphids to worms! We even spotted a roe deer!

If you are a local school or know of a local school who would be interested on a farm visit to Yattendon then please do get in touch with us at the Estate Office: 01635 203904 or email enquiries@yattendon.co.uk.

Open Farm Sunday 2019

Now in its 13th year the event saw 230,000 visitors get the chance to connect with where their food is grown, with over 550 visiting Yattendon Estate on Sunday 9th June.

There was a machinery display of modern-day machinery and the opportunity to get close to some of the livestock in the area, including the Estate’s British white cattle and turkey chicks from Walters Turkeys.Tractor and trailer rides around Haw Farm were very popular with a stop off to talk about how food was produced and environmental features on the Estate. Displays on how crops are grown, traceability of food and technology in farming proved popular. A working display beehive from Meadow Honey Farm also highlighted how the estate works closely to produce local honey and provide a habitat and food source for bumblebees.

Tea, coffee and a mountain of cake were served by a team of helpers, raising over £430 for Thames Valley Air Ambulance. Hog Roast and Ice creams also went down well with visitors. A massive thankyou to everyone who helped make the day a success by giving up their time.

Date for the diary is next year’s Open Farm Sunday Event on Sunday June 7th 2020!

The Royal Oak Refurbishment

The brand new food on offer at The Royal Oak includes:

– the most delicious, authentic Neapolitan pizzas – eat in or takeaway

The Road Club Meet

The club toured the Yattendon Estate by kind permission of Lord and Lady Iliffe starting at the Forestry Yard, Yattendon onwards via Pangfield Farm, Bucklebury and then on to Marlston finishing back at The Royal Oak in Yattendon Village Square.

The turnouts looked spectacular and were thoroughly enjoyed by many supporters.
